Episode 1

The Viking World

An exploration of the Viking world with, among other things, a look into attitudes surrounding the physical landscape. Did the Vikings look at their physical surroundings in more than just practical terms? What were some of the cairns like that Vikings made and what were they used for? Other topics in this episode include:

The importance of wealth in the Viking age. Why did the Vikings target Christian monasteries for their raids? Was there more to their motivation than just acquiring wealth? Were they actually anti-Christian? And what were contemporary attitudes towards the Vikings really like?

What did the Vikings themselves think about murder vs homicide? Was there a difference? And what made the Vikings so fierce on the battlefield? Did people’s attitudes of Vikings differ between the battlefield and everyday life?

Speaking of which, what were the daily roles of Vikings? Were they warriors or were they in fact peaceful farmers and traders? And what role did children play in the Viking age? Or did the concept of children even exist?

And finally, what is a berserker??
